Open coding systems come from qualitative analysis as a means to rationalize open-ended semantic information. They essentially create a map over the SemanticSpace by creating a much smaller semantic space to operate in. It's commonly referred to these days as tagging. When the coding is open to TheCollective, the emergent phenomenon is called a folksonomy.
