The first tier of benefits include mailing lists, meetings with instructional presentations and an excuse to hang out with geeks once in a while. And if you are lucky you might even get some free t-shirts or books. The second tier of benefits are gaining presentation and leadership skills by presenting and gaining job skills and job leads from fellow Linux users.

Many universities have a computer club. Many university computer clubs are similar to Linux user groups, since many techies prefer Linux over Windows, but are often more informal.
